After studying and working in Tuscany for many years, I decided to go back to my birthplace, western Sicily. Those years away helped me develop a new awareness for farming and winemaking, inspired by the full respect of the natural and biological rhythms. This part of Sicily is somehow inaccessible and wild but at the same time it is rich and generous, full of incredible aromas and unique flavours. It is on this land that I have decided to apply what I have learnt so far about sustainable and non-invasive agriculture. My commitment is to make artisanal wines which showcase all the varied and distinct properties of the soil and of the natural environment around my vineyards, but I also want my wines to show all the different nuances that every vintage brings along. My job is to interpret, assist and help, from the vineyard to the cellar, to the bottle. Fermentation is always spontaneous and my intervention in the cellar is essential but kept to a minimum in order to let the fermentation and the ageing process occur in the best way possible. Azienda Agricola Calogero Caruana consists of 3,9 hectares of vineyard, 2 ha of arable land and 3,5 hectare of olive groves with autochtone varieties such as Biancolilla and Nocillara del Belice. The vineyards are located above the Torre Salsa Nature Reserve (100m asl), in the province of Agrigento, less than 2km away from the sea, kissed by the sun and caressed by a light breeze. The vines are trained in guyot, bush and “candelabro” systems. The soil composition is made up of mostly sand from limestone formations. All the grape varieties are indigenous: ‘Nzolia (Ansonica), Grillo, Catarratto, Nero d’Avola and Nero Cappuccio surrounded by the beautiful, luxuriant Mediterranean brush.
- Size of their farm: 24 (ha)
