Project started in 2020, BEIORTE emerged with the desire to make my own wine in the remote village of Santa Ovaia, municipality of Oliveira do Hospital. Inserted in the Dão region and Alva sub-region, with granite soils, it is an area characterized by more rugged terrain, with little representation in terms of vineyard area in the region, also due to its proximity to mountains, such as Serra do Açor, which it faces the winery in the village.
The name of the project, BEIORTE, is the translation of “Wine” in the Arguina verb, a dialect that once existed in the village and is still used by some villagers, particularly the older ones. The words “BEIORTE GIDO” are written on each cork, meaning “good wine”. I hope that is the case…
Personally, as a young and curious winemaker, I always had this desire to make personal wines, but as our professional lives went elsewhere, it was only during the pandemic that Bea and I ended up settling down and thinking about developing something in this small village. We decided to recover our great-grandfather's small cellar, which once made wine and then distribute it in 500L barrels in the region's taverns, and give it a new life, with the main objective of making high quality artisanal wines, showing the purity and authenticity of the wines from Dão, recovering old vineyards whose owners were gradually abandoning because they were already old and no longer had the energy to continue. This is our legacy and our ambition: to preserve the ancient genetic heritage and what was good in the past, which was not altered or influenced by “fashions”.
